This paper presents part of the results of my PhD research (Menezes 2024) on subtitling and revision/quality control. It explores the decisions and actions of nine professional subtitling revisers who work from English into European Portuguese, with the aim of understanding how their revisions influence the quality and integrity of the final subtitled product.
The study focuses on three key areas:(1) what subtitling revisers do with the subtitles they have to revise; (2) how they conduct this task; and (3) how their individual experiences and backgrounds influence their decision-making.
By providing both general and specific insights into subtitling revision practices, this study highlights the crucial yet often overlooked role of revisers in ensuring the quality and integrity of translated content. The findings lay a foundation for rethinking how subtitling revision is integrated into workflows, how these complex tasks are compensated, and the type of training required to ensure high-quality outcomes in subtitling practice.
