Subtitling, traditionally used in audiovisual media, emerges as an innovative educational tool (Moh, 2024). By overlaying medical terms onto visual content, such as medical documentaries, surgeries, or simulations, students are exposed to terminology in a contextual and realistic setting, fostering a deeper understanding of its application and use. This method not only enhances vocabulary retention but also promotes a practical comprehension of medical jargon in real or semi-real-world scenarios (Israilova et al., 2021).
Furthermore, incorporating subtitles into medical curricula offers a comprehensive learning experience. Students engage with both spoken and written forms of terminology, reinforcing learning through these dual modalities (Miščin, 2023).
This activity will not only help students become more familiar with medical English vocabulary but also enhance their listening skills and ability to understand medical contexts.

Dr. Noelia Marques-Cobeta holds a Bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Valladolid, a MA in Medical translation from the University of Jaume I and a Ph.D. in Translation Studies from the University of Zaragoza. She is a Lecturer in the English and German Department, Faculty of Medicine, University of Zaragoza, where she teaches English in the Medicine degree. Marques-Cobeta has also been awarded with a grant from the European Union called NextGenerationEU to develop a research on audiovisual translation. She also taught specialised translation and English at University San Jorge and University of Zaragoza on undergraduate and MA levels. Her research interests include audiovisual translation, and the use of subtitling to improve the English language competences. He has published papers and book chapters on these topics. Since January 2022, she is an Honorary Research Associate at UCL for a three-year tenure.
