This course is designed for anyone looking to master translation subtitling as well as subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing (SDH) and closed captioning (CC). It is, suitable both for complete beginners and individuals with some experience but without formal training. It covers fundamental terms and concepts, industry-standard guidelines, technical specifications, timing specs and processes, file formats and conversion between them.
Participants will understand the mechanics and the underlying principles of subtitling, learning what defines high-quality subtitles and how to consistently create them. They will also learn how to create and describe sound effects, character (speaker) IDs, how to caption music and lyrics, while also refining the skill to distinguish between what needs to be included and what can be omitted in the subtitles.
By comprehending the rationale behind various practices, students will learn how to prioritize choices, even when faced with seemingly conflicting guidelines. The course assumes students have translation skills from English into their mother tongue as well as near-native proficiency in English, equipping them to deliver clear, accessible and high-quality subtitles and captions.
