COURSE OVERVIEW

This course is designed for intralingual subtitlers who want to specialize in creating high-quality subtitles in other languages. It is suitable for experienced linguists seeking to refine their subtitling practice, who have already mastered basic subtitling skills and know how to time and create subtitles.

The course covers the key principles and challenges of interlingual subtitling, including translation strategies, cultural adaptation and maintaining naturalness and rhythm within technical constraints. It also provides a detailed analysis of templated workflows, and the use of KNP files and style guides so students are best prepared to handle real-world assignments.

Through practical exercises and guided analysis, students will learn how to balance fidelity and fluency, ensuring that translated subtitles are both accurate and engaging for the target audience, while always complying with the clients’ requirements. The end goal is to convey the director’s intent by reproducing all dialogue in the target language in a non-intrusive manner that keeps the filmic illusion intact for the target audience.

This course follows a self-evaluated learning model, allowing you to actively assess your progress. After completing each task, you will receive an answer key and detailed guidance to compare your work against model solutions, helping you identify areas for improvement and consolidate your understanding. This course does not include individual tutoring or personalized feedback on submitted tasks. Learners are encouraged to rely on the provided answer keys and model solutions for self-assessment and skill development.

If no prior subtitling experience is had, completion of Subtitling Essentials is recommended before undertaking this course, as it provides the core practical, technical and theoretical foundation for creating and timing subtitles.
